This is an
elegant Georgian
washstand in solid Cuban
mahogany. The top with
moulded upstand and
shaped apron lies over a
single frieze drawer and
circular undertier
bounded by Gothic
inspired fretwork
carving.
This washstand is in
wonderful original
condition with no
repairs or breaks, no
warping and no evidence
of woodworm, old or
new. The brass drop
handle to the oak-lined
frieze drawer is
original. An old crack
in the rear of the oak-
lined drawer base has
been repaired some time
during the last
century. Old repairs
such as these are
consistent with age and
usage and a reassuring
sign of authenticity for
a piece that is 250
years old.
It is extremely rare to
find a piece of this age
in such excellent
original condition. The
depth of colour is
particularly good and
the washstand has never
been stripped or french
polished. The finish
demonstrates
an attractive glowing
patina, retaining the
original waxed surface.
This always adds
considerably to the
investment value, as so
often pieces of this age
were french polished in
Victorian times.
Altogether this lovely
Georgian washstand
represents an elegant
investment piece that
would make a perfect
lamp table/ wine table
or bedside cabinet.
