This is a very
attractive, useful
and elegant small
table in solid
mahogany designed in
the Sheraton Revival
style. It would make
an ideal side table
that could be opened
up to be used as a
card table, if
required.
The quality of
workmanship on this
piece is simply
exceptional, with
ebony inlay to the
top, satinwood
stringing and
intricate marquetry
inlaid panels.
The rectangular fold
over top in well
figured mahogany
with ebony border
and carved edge lies
over a deep frieze
with a central
classically
inspired marquetry
panel and semi
circular sunburst
carved panel below.
The frieze is
bounded on each side
by a further
marquetry panel of
trailing harebells
edged with scroll
carving. These
details are found on
both the front and
back, which is
another sign of the
quality of this
table.
The fold over top is
inlaid with the
original baize, that
is edged with a
gilt-tooled leather
border. The baize is
in reasonable
condition for its
age; a little worn
and marked in
places.
It is usually best
to keep the original
baize if it is at
all possible,
particularly as new
baize tends to be a
very bright, vibrant
green. However, if a
purchaser would
like the baize to be
replaced, this would
be done free of
charge.
The slender square
tapering legs are
inlaid with
satinwood stringing
and joined by an
elegant central
stretcher with
central raised
patera and bordered
by well carved
open fretwork
panels.
Although this table
is over a hundred
years old it has
obviously been well
looked after in its
lifetime as it is in
very good condition
with no cracks,
breaks or repairs.
There is no evidence
of warping or
woodworm. The table
retains the original
wax finish, with a
wonderful rich
glowing colour and
patina.
