Georgian Commode Converted to Chest of Drawers c.1780 (and later)

This is an attractive Georgian mahogany Commode which has been later converted into a Chest of Drawers of a very useful small size, with a good rich colour and patina.

The well figured top with reeded edge lies over four graduated drawers and slender bracket feet. The brass handles are original.

The carcass of the commode is original, including the top, sides, feet and drawer fronts. Internally, however, the drawer linings and runners have been constructed at a later date.

The conversion has been well done and has created a more useful piece of furniture. Given that all houses today have bathrooms there is no longer any use for furniture housing a chamber pot!

This is why so many commodes, pot cupboards and washstands are now adapted for other uses that are more suited to modern day patterns of living.
